Learn About Your State Bird Worksheets

Resource for cub scouts to learn about local birds

Learning about birds can be found in a number of the cub scout requirements and adventures.

Tiger Requirement: My Tiger Jungle – while on your 1-foot hike you get to look for 2 different birds and learn more about them.

Wolf Requirement: Paws on the Path – in this requirement you get to name 2 birds, 2 insects, and/or 2 other animals that live in your area and explain how you identified them.

Webelos and Arrow of Light Adventure, Into the Wild – where you get to study the birds outside of your home and in your neighborhood for a week and identify the ones you saw and track where and when you saw them.

There are a multitude of resources online and I have gathered some of the best I could find for you.

Supplies
You don’t need much in supplies to go looking for birds. But it doesn’t hurt to have a pair of binoculars.  A kid friendly pair is not going to be very strong in magnification. The lower the magnification the easier it seems to be for kids to use. Bird watching sites have recommended binoculars like this one but that is a little over the top if you are just working on a requirement for scouts. These binoculars are more my speed and honestly if I am working with the Tigers I would just go to a local dollar store and pick up some cute little ones and even though they are not very usable, they are really fun for the kids to have as the go on their adventure.

Yep. There is an app for that. There are a number of apps available for bird watchers and learning about birds but these are the 2 that I thought looked most interesting. The Merlin app which can identify a bird by taking a picture of it and the BirdsEye Bird Finding app that helps you find local birds on your birding adventures with your kids.
