Camping Meals Made Easy: Plan & Prep A Balanced Dinner

One of the best parts of camping is the food. Especially when you get to make it yourself. For the Personal Fitness Adventure, Arrow of Light Scouts are asked to plan a balanced meal and prepare it using the gear they’d take on a real campout.

It’s a great way to build independence and confidence. We will help you come up with a meal idea, choose your gear, and get cooking!

Requirement 1: Plan a balanced meal that you would eat when camping. Prepare that meal using the gear you would use on a campout.

What Does “Balanced” Really Mean?

A balanced meal usually includes 3 parts:
Protein – chicken, beef, eggs, dairy
Carbs – rice, pasta, potatoes, tortillas
Fruits & Vegetables – carrots, apples, peppers

Camp Cooking Gear Basics

Scouts should use the gear they would realistically bring on a campout. Here’s a basic list:

  • Mess Kit (bowl, cup, utensils)
  • Pot or pan for heating food
  • Camp stove or grill plate
  • Long tongs or spatula
  • Aluminum foil
  • Water jug or bottle
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Cast iron skillet

Helpful Tips

  • Keep prep simple: chop ingredients ahead of time or use precooked items
  • Always cook outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
  • Bring extra napkins and wet wipes—Scouts can get messy
  • Stay safe! Gloves, long-handled tools, and water on hand are all smart
